stable links and summaries

Class,

Make sure you give me stable links and summaries of the scholarly articles or you won't get full credit for your discovery. If I can't get to the page you link to, it won't count.

Classwork deadlines and extra credit

This is what I remember about our discussion yesterday:
  1. wiki deadline for all work is Thursday, midnight
  2. all concert reports, including extra credit reports are due to me on Tuesday, midnight. only emailed work will be accepted - take photos or make scans of concert programs and send to me via email.
  3. Extra credit will be considered this way:
  • Attending Friday night's choir concert gets 1.5 credit. Make sure you receive and turn in a blue card as well as a four paragraph summary of the concert. (this can be in the body of the email, no need to attach a document). Extra credit if you cheer at the end of the concert.
  • The movies "Amadeus" and "Immortal Beloved", if viewed and written about, get extra credit.
  • I have not determined a value for the extra credit yet. It will likely go towards improving your score on the Listening Tests.

Final Exam Details

The final exam for Music Appreciation is Thursday, April 29 at 10:45 a.m.

The exam will cover p. 340 - 377. Make sure you read those pages.

I've already created the exam and my advise is to pay attention to these things:
  • anything i've posted on the blog. know the details surrounding the works i have featured.
  • pay attention to names of composers from different countries, even if i haven't featured them in lecture or blog posts.
  • know the overview of serialism (12 tone row). Know something about the variations of a row.
  • know details about the composer closely resembling my name.
Listening:
  • We go back to make sure you know Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
  • Know the first twenty-one tracks on CD 4.
  • Be able to match the composer of the work with the name of the work.

Feedback from the professor: Scholarly Articles and Hyperlinks

Class,

When you are working on your wiki's, give me a short summary of the scholarly article. Don't just link to it.

Also, when you link to something, make it look like this and not this:

http://www.jstor.org/stable/766074?&Search=yes&term=Dvorak&term=Antonin&list=hide&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3DAntonin%2BDvorak%26wc%3Don%26dc%3DAll%2BDisciplines&item=15&ttl=1254&returnArticleService=showArticle

Topics in Romantic Period

Let me know if you have a problem via email.

Test preparation

Class,

Here is some help for Thursday's listening test:

1. I'll only do works that are found on the quizlet.
2. I'll use the first 30 seconds from each track. (track, not song)

Grading Mode

Class,

I am in grading mode on your wikis.  Because of this different approach to teaching a class, I'm not going to consider any of your projects complete yet.  That means that I am giving you an opportunity to update your wikis that incorporate my suggestions before a final grade is given.

Remember, I want you all to make a high grade in this class.  Here is some specific feedback to help you do your best:

Linking to main page
A major example of one thing that bothers me:  Students did not link back to the primary page to identify their subject.  When I start at the Baroque period, I expect to be able to go to the main page of your individual topic.  The same is true with the Classical period and Romantic Period.  (please fill in your topics on the Romantic Period page).  Realize this - your project isn't complete until you provide that initial link to your main source of information.

Links to scholarly articles
When you provide a link to your scholarly article, look to provide a "stable" link (also described as a persistent link to this record).  Otherwise, I can't find your article and give you credit.

Missed opportunities
I see certain missed opportunities in your wiki entries.  Here is what I mean (I'm going to use specific examples of student work as a way of providing feedback - since no one is penalized it seems OK).
  • Russell and Charlotte do a thorough overview of the Baroque sonata.  However, they mention "Sonata da camera" and "Sonata da chiesa" under the topic "Different kinds of sonatas" and then do not provide a link to the different kind of sonata.  A better approach - create a page for each type of sonata and link to it.  And with the wonder of the internet, I might look for a YouTube video of each type of sonata.
  • Chris and Kaitlyn link to outside sources of web pages - that is OK, but they miss an opportunity to create a new page that contains their own description of the material.  I would rather see their own version of those topics. They also mention tradegie lyrique and masque in their article with no real definition supplied - that's an opportunity to create a page that briefly defines each of those topics.
  • I like the history that Cathy gave of tuning, but each of these could probably be given separate entries.  Also, I shouldn't have to copy/paste a hyperlink (see the bottom of the page) - I should just click it, right?
  • Remember, encyclopedia articles are low on the totem pole of scholarly articles.
  • Internal linking to other students work is great and encouraged.
  • This is a big deal:  don't misspell a composer's name.  (Haydn, not Hayden).  Make sure you haven't done that.
  • If you have a composer as a topic, be thorough.  One paragraph isn't enough.  A major composer has different genres of composition - you should cover the major ones.  A brief life background and links to major compositions isn't enough.  When I click on a composer, I'm not looking for his life story.  I'm interested in his music, so I want to see an overview of his compositions, not the highlights from his life.
  • If you have an individual work, make sure you go "in depth" on the work.  A cursory look isn't enough - explore each of the movements.  You should also go to the main composer page and insert a link to your work.
Please remember:
  • I am more interested in the overall quality of your work rather than providing a grade.  Good grades will follow quality.
  • I'm not trying to shame you if I've highlighted your page - I'm trying to provide specifics so that you know I am talking about you.

Listening Test 1 and Listening Test 2

I know that some of you were not happy with the first listening test.  You will be able to make up that first listening test - completely - at the time of the second listening test on April 15, 2010.  I will replace the grade of Listening Test #1 with the retake.

We will do it this way:

1.  Have the second listening test.  A maximum of 3 plays per piece.
2.  Re-take the first listening test.  Only 1 play per piece.

Classical Period Assignments

I hope you enjoyed Spring Break!

Our next area is the "Classical Period" and it covers some great music and famous composers.

I've revised the course calendar to reflect our schedule for the rest of the semester.

I've got the wiki page set up here and we will assign projects today in class.

My thoughts about this project - think of it as assisting you in making a good grade:
  • There are several topics (like the major composers) that have places for 2-3 students to sign up.  You are responsible for coordinating the effort.  If you don't know the contact information of the other students, sign up for an individual project.
  • This is our second major wiki project.  I would like this one to be more "connected."  Work to find ways to link to other wiki pages.
  • I'll grade you on:
    • content
    • relationship to music
    • quality links
    • organization of material
    • internal links - looking at other work and finding relationships between subjects within the class
    • YouTube embeds are good but describe them for maximum impact.  anyone can paste code.
      • a link per YouTube is good.  describing the YouTube video is best.
  • Creating a powerpoint video on SlideShare is good but you are still responsible for quality content, great links, and superb organization (including the other topics noted above)
  • I want you to help me by showing the pages that you worked on.  I've created a form to assist us in this process here.  Indicate if you were the following:
    • Single author (you were the only one that worked on this page)
    • Primary author (you did most of the work)
    • Co-author (you did about half of the page development)
    • Contributor (you added some content but did not do the majority of the work)
  • In addition to the previous wiki projects, find two scholarly articles related to your subject.  Provide a brief description/summary of the article on your wiki page.
  • Remember:
    • do not "copy and paste" - rewriting the material is fine, but copying is cheating and you will fail
    •  use wikipedia as a resource to guide you to the most obvious beginning places
    • encyclopedias are ok, but work to find quality resources
    • use your web savvy to find reliable resources.  if it looks cheap, it probably is.  you are evaluated by the quality of your links, so choose wisely.

Concert Review #1 Due on Thursday, March 11

Concert Review #1 is due on Thursday, March 11.

There will be no class that day, but the review is due along with a program.  You need to include in your review a description of the first and last piece on the program.

I will provide additional information in this space soon.

Recording test

We will have a "Listening Test" on Tuesday, March 9.  I will play portions of the recordings that came with the CD's in the book from the chapters that cover Renaissance and Baroque.

More information later.

Baroque Project

Here is the list of topics and those assigned for the Baroque Wiki Project.

This is what I want:
  • You need to completely cover the information presented in the textbook associated with this topic in your own words - that is a starting point.
  • Assimilate data from several sources and rewrite in your own words.  Copying/Pasting from websites will receive a failing grade for the project.
  • Creating New Topics/Pages is encouraged and rewarded within the wiki.
  • Linking to Other Wiki pages (within our wiki) is encouraged and rewarded.
  • Creating a new page per any YouTube video is encouraged.  Discuss the recording that you find in your own words.
  • Provide additional information about any recording you find and include.
  • Find at least one additional scholarly topic/journal paper that involves your topic.  Look here for help.
  • I will give a STATUS grade of your work on the afternoon/evening of February 25 that will count for half of your grade.
  • Project must be complete on Tuesday, March 2.  We will review completed assignments and discuss the project on 3/2 and 3/4.

Grades Handed Out in Class Today

Class,

I am handing you your grades today in class for the following:

unpacking the rubric

Content:
Use the textbook as both a source and a point of departure:
will it be a survey?  will you dig deeper on a topic?
IMPORTANT:  keep a list of the sources that you use and don't rely solely on Wikipedia.  Find at least two authentic sources for the information you put forward.

Creativity:
YouTube video?  Interview of an expert?  Create a podcast?  Go with a skit?

Incorporation of Sound:
find some way to use a recording in your presentation regarding the subject matter.

Presentation:
Can you present your topic with humor?  Make it interesting for others?
